New Genre Icons
The organizers of the art event 'Kunstfeest het Oude Noorden' asked Orgacom to realize a project on-site in the public library in Rotterdam, Old North quarter. Orgacom worked closely with the public library to research how visitors use the amenity. For example, Orgacom listed the icons used to indicate the different novel genres and then interviewed visitors to the library. Interviewees were asked to invent new icons and genres. Eleven new icons were painted in color on panels hanging on the exhibition wall. The new icons also served as covers for the 'books' made in the 'Booklet project'.
Children from classes that visit the library were asked to make their own book. The were then asked to classify it and add it to the library's book collection. Each child copied a maximum of 25 pages from different books - the pages had to be copied from books the children enjoyed or books they thought were attractively illustrated. The children had to classify their book in a genre using one of the genre icons created by the artists as the front page for the 25 copies. The local photocopy shop 'Van der Meer' on the Pynackerplein sponsored binding the books. Categorizing texts is one of the library's key tasks, and the project helped to make the children aware of this function.
